Innovative Techincal Framework
KnowMED Knowledge Analytic Platform
Understanding, diagnosing,
treating, and preventing human disease requires the integration of information
and knowledge from all levels of biology including molecules, tissues, organ
systems, individuals and populations.
Heterogeneous information
from semantically and schematically disparate sources must benormalized,
integrated and mapped to an array of biomedical vocabulary systems. Integrated data need to be
repurposed to support research and practical applications across different
principles, and among different communities, without losing or distorting the
semantics and the context of the original data. Sensitive health information needs to be
shared and exchanged in an environment that is distributed in time and space
and among boundaries of different jurisdictions, organizations, departments,
and information systems. All these operations must comply with organizational policies
and regulations relating to the proper use of data (consent management, accountability,
confidentiality, audit, and control).
Knowmed Knowledge Analytic
Platform is a suite of semantic solutions and a technology portfolio that
enable KnowMED to implement dynamically adaptable health information systems
that address all axis of complexity in health information interoperability.

KnowMED Solution Framework:
All KnowMED Solutions are developed around the following 3 principle technical frameworks:
1- Use of Resource Definition Framework (RDF) for fine-grained, atomic, explicit and detailed information representation. The RDF enables uniquely identifying each and every data element in a web of interconnected data distributed among multiple systems over a large network.
2- Use of Ontologies to provide context and meaning for RDF data in a dynamically extensible fashion. OWL ontology language provides rich and expressive constructs for KnowMED technologies to contextualize and reuse data, adapt to change and new requirements rapidly, and deploy computer reasoning for problem solving and classification on multi-source data.
3- Services Oriented Architecture. SOA enables construction of reusable, scalable and dynamically interoperable applications distributed on large and loosely coupled network architectures.

Architectural Perspective:
KnowMED application design architecture rests upon triangulation of 3 modern systems concepts: a) using goal-directed,
user centric task analysis to identify operational information representation and information retrieval requirements along with all dependencies
and governing cultural, regulatory and environmental constraints; b) using knowledge
engineering and modeling techniques to create formal models (ontologies) that provides context for computational interpretation of information available to the system; c) deploying an array of
Services that are invoked on demand to implement information interpretation processes using
context and information provided by the ontologies.
This high level architecture
conceptualizes an iterative process where new information are described
reusing and extending existing ontologies or by constructing new ones, and are
implemented by reusing or extending existing Services or by adding new
services to the portfolio of system Services. KnowMED technologies enable integrated and
organically growing architectures that maximizes utility of all computational resources by capitalizing on reuse of existing models and
Services, and scale up to meet future challenges by employing technological
frameworks that are designed for agility and dynamic evolution as well as
interoperability and integration.
KnowMED architecture leverages Internet based
technologies such as the Semantic Web and SOA for integration and interoperability on a heterogeneous environment that is
distributed in time and space. This enables construction of a distributed and
collaborative consortium, where participants contribute their data along with ontologies that describe them and Services to access and interpret them, and benefit from using information, ontologies
and Services that are shared within that consortium. This is an extension and improvement to the traditional SOA where Services are the only shared and reusable resources. KnowMED technology help present the data, the knowledge and the Services as reusable, shared and distributed resources, as ingredients of designing ultra large scale, federated and interoperable systems. |
